Top 10 Things You Should Never Say To A Geeky Person
Like the jock, the nerd, the player, or any other stereotype we have in society today, many people associate geeks with certain norms. But, like every stereotype, not all people fit that mold. Simply because someone enjoys a certain genre of movie, wears certain types of clothing, or wears a pair of hipster glasses, doesn’t mean they fall in the category of being a geek. For this reason, it is important to avoid falling in to these stereotypes; but, if you do know someone who considers themselves a geek, it is also important to know certain things about them, in order to avoid saying something they may consider to be offensive.
Regardless of the type of movies they like, how good they might seem at math, or what they like to do on the weekends, geeks are people just like everyone else. For this reason, it is important to treat them as such, and avoid certain slurs or stereotypes against them. These are a few things every geek will despise hearing, or comments which really are overly insensitive towards an entire group of people.
10. Aren’t Star Wars & Star Trek the Same?
In short no; one was initially a TV show, the other began as an original movie. Further, simply because you look at someone and presume they fit the mold of being a geek, doesn’t automatically mean they watch both of these films and shows. In fact, many will have a preferred series, and will generally not watch both of these film and TV series which have become so well known over time.
9. Can You Fix This?
Another common misinterpretation we have of geeks is that they are great at working on computers and gaming systems. In many cases they are, but unless they went to school and studied this, or did work in graphic or computer design, they aren’t always going to be able to fix things. And, like most people, they will offer the suggestion of resetting the computer to see if it is going to resolve the problem you are having with it.
8. What’s the Difference Between?
Another misconception we have about geeks is that they all play video games, or watch certain types of films. So, questions like: what’s the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek, or what is Minecraft, are a few questions you should try to avoid. Not all geeks are gamers, and not all geeks watch certain TV or film genres; it is not only offensive, but in many cases, most of them will not know the answer to such questions.
7. So You Know Everything About the Internet?
Not all geeks know what proxy servers are, or know how to code a game or other title that you are trying to create. Just because they enjoy gaming, or a certain attire, does not automatically mean they understand how to build you a new PC, or help you choose the best internet connection to ensure you will get the best signal, and the fastest speeds when you are browsing the web.
